In the past decade or so, the term functional training has become a huge "hot word" in the fitness industry. The majority of "good trainers" have stopped using weight machines with their clients and instead are using exercises that improve the bodies ability to move freely.
Think about it...
When was the last time you sat down and pushed something that weighed 50 lbs. outside of the gym?....
Probably not recently, or ever for that matter.
The chest press machine is great if you want to build muscle and strength in your chest. But the fact of the matter is, it's not doing anything for your core, balance, coordination and ability to function in activities of daily living.
Improving people's ability to successfully and safely take on life's physical challenges, is truly the essence of "functional training" and there is amazing benefits to working with a trainer who values that philosophy.
As we age, it becomes increasingly important too! Things that we once took for granted can become daily obstacles and sometimes in extreme circumstances can make us feel completely helpless.
They always say, "a picture is worth 1000 words." I wonder how many words a video is worth? :)
Check out these exercises I use with my clients at Thunder. I think you'll understand exactly what I'm talking about.
