Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the end for many dieters. Once turkey day hits, an avalanche of banquets, holiday parties and celebrations ensue. By the time Christmas comes, the majority of us have developed a case of the "aww..screwits" and put physical health on hold until January 1st.
Well, this time could be different! And before you click off of this page...hold on a minute!
I'm not going to tell you to give up on living this holiday season and exile yourself from the party. And I'm definitely not going to tell you to eat cucumber sandwiches while everyone else is enjoying their pumpkin pie.
The only thing I'll ask you to think about changing this holiday season is the amount of calories you're DRINKING!
If you sat down and added up the amount of calories you drink on a daily basis, it might shock you. Here's an example that isn't really that far-fetched, and maybe you can even relate:
Breakfast: 8 oz. glass of OJ = 110 calories
Mid-morning: Dunkin' Medium Mocha Iced Coffee w/ cream = 260 calories
Lunch: 8 oz. glass of soda (not diet) = 100 calories
Dinner: 8 oz. glass of 2% milk = 130 calories
If you're thinking...that's 600 calories! You're absolutely right. And if you're trying to lose weight, that could represent about 1/3 of the calories you're allowed for the entire day!
Around the holidays, it's not just the OJ, soda and milk we need to worry about either. It's the screwdriver, rum & coke and white Russian that will really send our beverage intake skyrocketing.
Every alcoholic beverage is at least 97 calories, which only accounts for the standard 14 grams of alcohol in a regular drink. So just keep in mind, when you're mixing up that drink... you could be doubling the calories!
Now don't go sit in the corner of the party all alone sucking on your coconut water yet! There is a way to have a good time and keep the calorie consumption to a minimum. It's all about making compromises.
Instead of using whole milk or eggnog with your dark rum, use 1% or skim milk. You will save at least a hundred calories per drink there.
Instead of regular coke...go diet or even seltzer! That's a savings of about 100 calories per drink as well!
Instead of OJ...use True Orange or orange flavored crystal light.
Instead of the winter lager...go with a light beer and save 50-100 calories per drink.
At the end of the day, maintaining a healthy weight is a lifestyle. Our society makes it incredibly easy to overindulge and this time of year presents us with even greater challenges to overcome.
If you do one thing this holiday season, regulate the calories you're drinking, they truly do add up fast. And if you succeed with this strategy, I guarantee you're going to notice a big difference on the scale come New Year's day.
Remember to always drink responsibly :)
