How Small Group Classes Or A Personal Trainer Can Get You In The Best Shape Of Your Life (Even If You’re Afraid To Try)
Joining a professional fitness program can be the best thing for you, but if you hire the wrong trainer, the results can be catastrophic! Injuries, not meeting your goals, setbacks and disappointment are all possible if you're not in the right hands.
Working with a personal trainer can be intimidating. Here are a few of the questions I get all the time.
You may have these same questions and you have every right to ask them before getting involved with a personal trainer. Here are my answers and also some "real feedback" from some of my clients to back up what I'm telling you.
1: Will I get hurt?
Gyms and trainers are a dime a dozen. You see them everywhere. And you can tell who the good ones are right away by "their credentials" and willingness to get to know about your health history and capabilities.
Some people do get hurt under the supervision of a trainer, but most of the time because the trainer doesn't understand how to customize a plan based on an individuals needs.
At Thunder Sports & Fitness, our top priority is to help you exceed your goals safely. The most important thing to me is that you stay injury free. Because that is so important to me, I've invested the time in achieving a Master's Degree in Exercise Science and also hold one of the top fitness certifications in the world (NSCA-CSCS).
"Working out in a group again, rather than one-on-one with a personal trainer made me nervous. Was I going to be the uncoordinated dork who can't keep up with the rest of the class? Was my injury going to cause me to be the problem client in the group?
I love the small class size at Thunder, personal attention, awesome trainer, and on the fly modifications. I'm comfortable because you take time to focus on each individual, rather than just speaking to the masses. Workouts are challenging without leaving us spent at the end of class, and can be easily customized to each person's intensity level and needs. At prior gyms, both in classes and one-on-one, I'd be so sore that I'd miss workouts for a couple of days after. Here, I'm sore afterwards, but not debilitated."
2: Am I too old?
Fact is, the older you are, the more important a personal trainer is. As we age, we recover slower and are more prone to injury. That’s a fact.
A personal trainer who understands you and your needs is extremely important.
“My concerns were my age and whether I'd be comfortable working out with people who were much younger. And I was a little worried that it would be too hard for me. I think meeting you at the gym and getting a feel for the kinds of exercising I'd be doing, along with being comfortable with you made me decide to give it a try.”
It's been 9 months now and those concerns are not even on my mind anymore. I love working out with weights and feel stronger than I've been in years! Not to mention...this was the first Winter I haven't taken a fall since I can remember."
3: Am I too out of shape?
This is a common question. People believe they need to get into shape before they can move up to small group or personal training.
The opposite is true. A skilled and professional personal trainer can help you succeed regardless of your initial level of fitness. Starting slow with a structured program helps you avoid injury and makes exercise more fun.
“I never had a trainer before. I’ve always been intimidated by them and thought I wouldn’t be able to handle it. I did Zumba for a while, but the twisting put way too much pressure in my knees and I was hurting so much I had to quit.
Right before I joined Thunder, I was extremely out of shape, immobile, got winded easily and was just ready to change. I didn’t know if Thunder was right for me, but I was willing to do anything because I was desperate.
Joining this program has saved my life! I'm now in my 60's and feeling stronger and more energetic -plus I've lost 20 pounds since I started. Looking back, I hate to think what life would be like if I hadn't joined this program."
4: What if I can’t keep up?
The worst thing you can do is hire a personal trainer who pushes you too hard. There is a limit. And a great personal trainer will evaluate your situation and create a program that will both challenge and push you, but is also easy for you.
"We never worked with a trainer before and weren’t comfortable going to a GYM to exercise on our
We both had flexibility and balance issues and decided to join Brian’s Magnificent Mobility exercise session at the Naugatuck Senior Center. Brian is a great motivator and helped us feel looser, stronger and more confident.
We both joined Thunder after that class and love it! The best part is that Brian is able to modify the program so that no one, regardless of their capabilities is left behind. My husband has some limitations and he never feels inadequate or embarrassed. We both feel comfortable coming here."

5: Should I go to the GYM on my own first to get in shape?
Not too many people succeed getting in shape alone. You start with the best intentions - and before long run completely out of workout ideas and motivation.
A better solution is to hire a professional trainer or join a group right from the start! You will have a solid program to follow that will get results and also instant accountability from a coach to keep you on track.
“I joined because I need motivation to work out. I just couldn't motivate myself to work out on my own.
With that said, your work outs are very engaging and you do a good job keeping me motivated. In three weeks I already feel like I have more energy than I did in a long time. Also the environment you have set up doesn't make me feel pressure to keep up with anyone, doesn't make me feel judged or make me feel self-conscious about doing an exercise wrong - which is how I felt going to a regular gym."
There are a lot of questions that prevent people from taking the next step with a personal trainer. Many of my clients experienced the same exact feelings prior to joining Thunder.
Change can be difficult - and trusting someone with your health can be scary. But if you do find the right trainer...it can be a completely life changing experience!
