When people first walk into Thunder, they are generally a little confused? There's not one single cardio or weight machine in the gym!
The Thunder program is 100% built around functional weight training, using several different modalities including: body weight, kettlebells, dumbbells, resistance bands and barbells...just to name a few.
There are a couple of reasons why I choose to do it this way, but at the top of the list is the fact that, "muscle is a calorie burning furnace!" Now… I don't intend to turn all of my clients into body builders, but there is no question that having a little extra muscle on the body makes a huge difference in metabolism.
Unlike fat, muscle needs energy to sustain life. Each pound of lean mass you have burns about 12-15 calories/day as you REST! Yes! You heard me correctly! As you're sitting there reading this right now, your muscle tissue is hard at work burning calories to sustain itself on your skeleton.
There are several ways to speed up metabolism, but among the most effective and long lasting strategies is “to add muscle.” And the best ways to do that are by working out with weights and having proper nutrition.
Here is a weight training circuit I use with my clients right here at Thunder to increase lean body mass, improve strength and help my weight loss clients succeed!
Yes, the treadmill will burn calories while you're using it. But, unfortunately, within minutes of stepping off, the body temperature returns to normal and the metabolism stabilizes back to resting levels. You can’t beat good old cardio to improve heart and lung health, but…beware!
If you’re goal is to lose fat this year – the cardio equipment can’t be the cornerstone of your fitness program!
To get the most bang for your buck this year, join a program that incorporates weight training at least 2 days/week. The results in your waistline will come quicker and will last longer with this strategy, if you give it some time and stick with it.
